Tips for choosing a wedding photographer

Choosing a photographer is one of the top wedding priorities for many couples but finding the right one can be a daunting task. Here are a few tips that I hope you’ll find helpful:.

  • Start early: popular wedding dates (particularly Saturdays during spring & summer) might be booked months in advance. In some cases, I’ve had popular dates booked over a year in advance. Starting early gives you the most options to work with.
  • Do a bit of research: look up wedding photographers in your area - Google, Facebook groups & your friends & family are a great place to start! Check their websites, read their reviews & contact the ones that you think would be a good fit. Many wedding photographers are also open to traveling so you may be want expand your search geographically if your budget allows for it.
  • Create a short list: one of the easiest ways to do this is to decide on a photography budget & wedding date - this will quickly narrow down your list to those that are in your budget range & are available on your wedding date. From there, decide on your top 2 or 3 photographers & arrange a meeting (or call) with each of them. Check out my blog post on questions to ask your photographer.
  • Choose the best fit: once you’ve established your shortlist & had a chance to get to know them a little bit better, think about who you would feel most comfortable having around you on your wedding day & hire them!
